The Peel-Harvey Estuary system, where the Murray and Serpentine rivers meet the Indian Ocean 75 kilometres south of Perth, shelters one of Australia's most accessible wild dolphin populations. More than 80 resident bottlenose dolphins navigate the inland waterways year-round, feeding in the shallow channels and nursery zones of the estuary. Unlike open-ocean pods, these dolphins move through narrow canals bordered by residential jetties and natural mangrove corridors, bringing them within metres of observation vessels. The proximity is a function of geography: the Peel Inlet's average depth of three metres concentrates marine activity in predictable corridors, and the dolphins have adapted their foraging behaviour to the tidal rhythm of the channels. Mandurah's commercial dolphin-watching operations began in the late 1980s, following research by Murdoch University biologists who documented the estuary's stable resident population. By the mid-1990s, the town had formalised a code of conduct for marine tour operators, limiting vessel speed in dolphin zones and establishing minimum approach distances. Today, the fleet departs from 73 Mandurah Terrace, a jetty precinct adjacent to the town bridge, where the estuary narrows into a tidal funnel. Morning departures align with the incoming tide, when dolphins follow schools of yellow-fin whiting and blue swimmer crabs into the estuary's eastern arms.
